REM's environmental approach is founded on best practices: avoid, reduce, offset. We made several adjustments to the route during the planning phase and implemented voluntary initiatives.
Our initiatives
Greenhouses gases
Once in service, the REM will help reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2.5 million tonnes over 25 years of operation.
Tree planting
Through a voluntary partnership with Earth Day and the 375000arbres.org program, 250,000 trees will be planted to offset the GHG emissions produced during the construction phase.
Agricultural zone
An agricultural land trust will be created to recognize and revitalize the agricultural lands bordering the Rive-Sud terminal station, in partnership with the Union des producteurs agricoles and the Communauté métropolitaine de Montréal.
Sustainable mobility and transportation event
Agreements have been reached with sustainable mobility partners to diversify travel options between home and the station, such as car sharing, carpooling and electric taxis.

Project improvements
August 2016
First series of project enhancements: acquisition of CN overpass, route modification in the Technoparc Montréal sector, moving of equipment from the Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue station, thereby eliminating impacts on wetlands, heritage and more.
November 2016
Second series of project enhancements: three new downtown stations, including two new connections to the Montréal metro.
March 2017
Third series of project enhancements: development of wildlife crossings, undertakings to preserve natural environments and more.
